Not the fruit lol. What type of crate did you get for your pup? We are failing miserably at getting Chloe PTed and was going to try crate training her. I ordered a good size pen to keep her in (as much as I really don't want to do that)and we are going to try that. I was wondering what you, or anyone on here really, used to kennel/pen/crate train their pups.

i crate trained all my dogs and they really do help, we always used the metal crates for ours.

I was really against the kennel (or crate). I had a dog with really bad separation anxiety. She was a great dog until we left the house. She would tear the place apart. My dog trainer had tried convincing me forever to get one and I finally broke down and did it. My dog actually loved the thing, it was her own little bedroom. She slept in there even when she didn't have to. They say that dogs are den animals by nature... Anyhow, that is how I trained my next dog and it was amazing how well he did. I followed all the directions I was given by the trainer. We got him at 5 weeks old and he only had 1 accident in the house ever. I'll never try any other way now.

Granted the kennels are now in the garage and not in use, I keep them in the bathroom or the bedroom when I'm gone now. Although I'm sure they would be just fine if I left them to roam the house... The one with separation anxiety passed a few years ago, so I don't have that issue anymore.

Anyhow, the one I got was the plastic, cheap one from PetSmart. I've also tried the metal ones. They have all worked out the same...

I bought her a 6x6 play pen to stay in while I'm not home and according to what the vet told me today I need to keep her in that the vast majority of the day. Its big enough to put a bed and food, water and toys in. I'm tired of the messes shes making in the house and no matter what I do she doesn't seem to get that our living room carpet isn't her toilet. Putting her on puppy pads without saying anything when she starts to go isn't working, picking her up and running her outside without saying a word isn't working and using those sprays that are supposed to attract them to certain areas aren't working. Hell, I would be ecstatic if she would go on the damn kitchen floor instead of carpet. Unfortunately we were also told her breed is notoriously difficult to house train. Next payday I'm getting a dog door for my patio door as well. So I'm hoping that helps her figure it out. I've been reading up on crate training techniques on the web all night and am hoping some of these ideas work for her. She's such a sweetie and she does know right from wrong because we have already broke her from quite a bit but this is just the one thing we are having issues with.

I've read to crate train them the kennel should be no bigger than for them to properly stand up, turn around and lay down. If there is extra room in there they will poo and pee in it and that does no good for the training. Once you let them out and take them immediately to the place where they are supposed to "go" they go and learn very quickly. This is what we did with our dog as a pup and it worked wonders...except we didn't keep her in it at night and she enjoyed having fresh carpet in the hallway for her diarrhea :(

Not sure if that helps you at all, but figured I would share.

Yes yes, I have an actual kennel (little) to put her in but the 6x6 is for the rest of the day until I can get her to go outside on her own. Im not supposed to only take her out of the little kennel to eat and poop am i? That was a sincere question not sarcasm..lol

KellyP --- 14 years ago -

That's exactly how we trained ours, it only took about 2 weeks of that! Put them in the kennel (little) at all times and only take them out to eat and poop (and some lovin' after they potty in the right place of coarse!)

Eat...put em back in for a bit then take them back out to potty...then right back in till the next potty session.
I know it seems mean and all, but once they get used to that routine they will know to only potty where you took them and you can let them out to roam for an hour at a time after they learn to test them, and increase the roaming time as they progress until they've got it down 100%.
We put the food/water in the kennel with her and took her out just for potty and lovin' though.

We fast track :) lol

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooh! No freakin wonder shes dropping bombs everywhere. I was doing it TOTALLY wrong. Gah, I'm a total dog-tard. She is our first puppy ever so I'm learning as I go. Man she is not going to like that one bit. We are talking screaming fits.

KellyP --- 14 years ago -

Not saying my method is right! lol, just saying that's what we did and it worked. Sure they don't like being in there at all at first if it's not what they are used to, and they do whine and bark a bit for a while. But they get used to it and except it if you are firm!
When they start doing what you want them to do, they start getting more freedom and catch on. It sounds like your vet is suggesting you just give up and pen her all day long...not fair! They are all trainable (no matter how stupid of a breed it is :)...eventually.

We tend to stick to the healer breeds which are very smart...I can't stand stupid dogs! lol

Keep trying. If something isn't getting any better after a couple weeks of trying it, switch to a different method till you figure it out together. Don't give up!

Justine --- 14 years ago -

no matter how stupid of a breed it is :)
LOL she wouldn't have been my first choice but the whole litter was thrown at the bottom of an empty dumpster at my aunts apt complex. My aunt and sister rescued them all and she was the only one left and my sister literally came over while my kids were home (since we finally own a house they have been begging for a dog since we got the keys) and goes I got the kids a puppy. Of course the kids had a heart attack and that was that. I told my sister when I was walking out to her car I hope she never needs a kidney or liver portion because I'm going to remember this.
She really is a total sweetheart. VERY lovable. We are just having this one snag.

KellyP --- 14 years ago -

lol about the kidney or liver!

I think the vet was under the impression I was wanting to pad train then move to the back yard when she was bigger but I'm thinking that's a step back with her. Im going to try kennel training her.

DOnt worry my beagle is just over a year old and I still cant get him to potty outside all the time. I hate it. I have no idea what else to do with him. Oh and he ate about half my kids toys. He chews on everything too.

UGH! DO NOT WANT!

Sorry I missed this one...everyone has good info! I was using a regular medium crate. Feed them in there & put a toy/blanket, like batman said, it becomes thier little den. After they eat take them out, I would say potty about 100 times & praise them when they go. If they don't go, you can take them back in, back to thier crate for a little bit, then try again. (reward them with play only after they do thier business outside)

It's also suggested to not let a new dog/puppy be able to roam all over the house.

I had our crate in the kitchen area & would put the puppy in our bedroom (with her crate) at night. I've had terrible allergies for the last week & made a really hard decision to return the puppy.

It was to the point of taking medicine, my eyes being red & itch so bad I want to just rub my eyelids off. This puppy licked alot & I read that is where the allergy comes from. I chose her & she was the only shedding breed. It was a tough decision but I have to be able to care for my kids & not be taking all this medicine that only half works.

Just search online about how to crate train your puppy. Ours was doing really good. I thought we would have her for a very long time but I have never had allergies like that in my life. Best of luck
