Hello! We just got orders to Fort Hood and we are really excited cause we are from Houston and love the idea of being closer to home! I was wondering though how this base is? I know its HUGE, but I have heard the crime is insane!! We have only been to one post and its very quite here as far as crime so I am just wondering. I have also been told not to move on post or in Killeen is this true?? Any info would be great! Also which schools are the best,Elementary schools? Thank you in advance! 

I heard all that before coming here too. I was scared to be anywhere but it turns out that not all of it is all that bad. I used to live on post but left after being there about a year and a half. I've lived in Copperas Cove for a year and a half now and I like it a lot. Each city around here has crime, you can't escape that, even on post. There are some really nice areas in Killeen and there are some awful areas in Harker Heights. It's like that anywhere you go really... As for the schools, I'm childless so I have no idea. But I've heard from friends that the schools in Copperas Cove are better. 

The only advice I can offer is over a year old, but I don't think a whole lot has changed though. Crime isn't as bad as it seems, only bad news travels widely and quickly!

The crime here is no worse then the crime in Junction City. There is tons to do. The houses arnt perfect but arnt too bad either depending on what village you live in. Blora is a nice spot in the summer to go to. I like there nature in lights at Christmas time. I agree that Copperas Cove schools seem to be the best around. Off post housing Id personally go to Cove but Harker Heights isnt bad either. You have to stop when they play retreat at 5:00 or you can get a ticket. This base is far less a$$ backwards then Riley. People actually sometimes do there jobs. Lol. Id go back to Hood in a heart beat! Hope you enjoy it!

We pcs'd here from Ft Riley as well. I have to admit I love it there and miss it bunches.lol I dont know the place very well but it's not that bad. I have to agree with the other ladies it is just like any other city you live in. We are from the HOuston area as well. Katy to be exact. When do you plan on moving here. My oldest will be in first grade this year and we live in Venable Village and my son goes to Venable Elem and we love the school. I am not a fan of my neighbors but the neighborhood is fine. I think with neighbors it doesnt matter where you live there will always be a bad apple. But goodluck moving. 

I absolutely love living on post and Fort Hood. I was very lonely when I lived off post.
