Ok so we have been trying to get pregnant for about 3 years, I finally got a diagmosis with PCOS and hypothyriod. They put me on metformin for the PCOS and Synthriod for my thyriod. Has anyone ever taken these and did it help you to start ovulating again? My dr is pushing me to get on Clomid but I'm hesitant because I want to get my PCOS in order before I take it. What do you suggest I do? Did you get pregnant while taking Metformin or Clomid? Any help would be awesome! Thanks in advance

Before I lost my weight, I was diagnosed with PCOS. Can't say it started me ovulating again by taking the meds but it did cause me to lose weight. I don't have any children, was able to conceive when I tried and lost one before she was born. I also have complex endometrial hyperplasia (which they have told me I developed from the PCOS). I'm sorry I am no help but I have heard of several people getting pregnant that had PCOS after they started taking the metformin and some with clomid also.

Good luck.

Jenn I had no idea you had PCOS.

I have been diagnosed with PCOS about a year ago. Husband and I are TTC and I was having very irregular periods to where we couldn't even have sex cause I was always on my period. They put me on Provera which is a hormone to help concieve...they also said that it is more common with heavier women..Ive always had problems with my ovaries even before my first baby so it wasn't a total shock that its kinda progressed but the sucky part is the fact its gonna take alot of work (hehe) and prayer to have another. My Dr. told me that working out is a good way to subside the symptoms. She told me I would always have this but with diet and excerise and correct dosage of vitamins and minerals the symptoms would subside. Its extra hard to lose weight for us and easy to gain. I have heard alot of good things from Metformin and am thinking of asking my Dr. to switch me because the stuff I'm on now isn't doing awhole lot. I have 2 short periods instead of one long one which usually lasted close to 3-4 weeks. Theres alot of info on WebMD and even if you just Google it. When I first found out I was hurt because I feel like I'm ruining my marriage and disappointing Danny because I can't give him the one thing he wants. Kids. I'm scared to death that hes going to be unhappy with me because I don't know if I'm gonna be able to conceive again. My Dr. told me my chances were a bit better because I have had a baby before with no problems with the pregnancy but it is still going to be hard. Its not impossible is what she kept telling me...even if we had to resort to fertility treatments. PCOS is something your always going to have but watching your weight, eating healthy, exercise, and making sure you take your vitamins your symptoms will subside and you'll be able to have children. There are alot of support groups and success stories all over the internet. Depression and stress is also a very big factor...which is where I am failing to relieve. If you need someone to talk to or just need a shoulder to cry on send me a message. My sister-in-law just recently found out she was pregnant and its an "oops" to her and she hid it for 2 months trying to figure out how to tell me because she knew how badly we were trying and didnt want us to think she did it out of spite or was trying to rub it in...so I know and understand how annoying and devasting it can be. Best of luck!!

I was misdiagnosed at Bragg with PCOS. The metformin did help me lose about 25 lbs in about 6 weeks. it will tear your stomach up until you are off the loading dose. If they are positive you have it then what i was told by my nurse is that if you take 500mg cinnamon with the morning dose and 500mg cinnamon (these are supplement capsules)w the evening dose, some women get pregnant that way without having to resort to clomid. something about how the cinnamon reacts to the meds and PCOS

So is Metformin to help with the PCOS or is it precribed to help women with PCOS to get pregnant?

Redneck Martha Stewart --- 13 years ago -

I believe its to help women with PCOS to get pregnant. There are so many different medicines for this that are used for multiple things. If I remember right I think I was told Metformin is good for diabetics or pre-diabetics when in this situation. The PCOS is when your ovaries are functioning right causing you not to ovulate and not releasing eggs...which attaches to your ovaries that later becomes cysts...alot of women have ovarian cysts and never know it and some fight it all their life like I have. I think I read that its been called "pearl necklace" because of the amount and poly meaning "many" I just read it recently but dont quite remember the wording.

You also produce to much testosterone and not enough estrogen and can lead to diabetes because of the insulin and sugar issues.

I have info up the a** for this...so really...if anyone has any type of question please message me lol

Its also the #1 reason in infertility in women.

Metformin is used to help with the symptoms of PCOS and as it is alleviating those, it helps with fertility.

Thank you guys! This has been so stressfull! Between the hypothyriod and PCOS it has been nearly impossible to lose weight! The Metformin does definately tear up my stomach! I'm on 1500mg a day and my dr wants to work me up to 2500mg. My dr didnt say anything about taking cinnamin with it, but I'm going to try that! I know cinnamin helps regulate your blood sugar so that does make sense. Has anyone been on anything other than Metformin or Provera and had any luck? The dr wants to put me on clomid, but I'm nervous about that bc I know it does make you gain weight and the hormones in it have made several of my friends "crazy". I'm super senstive to any extra hormones lol. But now I'm just so ready that I'm willing to try it. For anyone on Metformin, if it helped you ovulate, how long did it take? I've been on it since the end of Sept and I'm now having a period monthly at least but its not regular yet. Also, do you know if I can take my thyriod medicine with Clomid? This has just been so hard, as I'm sure you guys know. I hate when people ask me when I'm going to have another baby or people saying "oh you wouldn't understand, you only have one" I am thankful that I have one, and I thank God everyday for him. We have thought of adopting, but we are stationed inGermany know so we can't right now. I know in TX we can do foster to adopt so we are hoping to get stationed there again when we PCS from Germany. Has anyone else looked into this and what experiences did you have? I have heard that it's hard for an enlisted family to adopt for some reason. Thank you for all the advise. It's nice to know thatI'm not alone in this :)

What form of metformin do you take? The extended release is supposed to be easier on the stomach.
I listened to a podcast about PCOS that was very informative here Dr Fox interview

Redneck Martha Stewart --- 13 years ago -

We have thought about adopting/fostering but we want to keep trying. We haven't gotten the "I'm sorry kids are not possible at all" from my dr so we know there is still some hope...maybe not much but there still something there.

I like some of the support groups I've found with this

Best of luck :)

huh...when did this happen?

Redneck Martha Stewart --- 13 years ago -

and what are the 3 factors because my Dr. never said anything to me about that....

Megz (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

we found out i was misdiagnosed in july or august...the factors are the cysts on the ovaries, high levels of testosterone and unusual amounts of body hair

stephensmommy --- 13 years ago -

I'm on the regular metformin, I might ask for the extended release if that seems to be better. I had the cysts on my ovaries and high testosterone, i luckily did not have the body hair issue lol. all my hormones were messed up though bc hypothyriod also messes with hormones. You also gain wieght with PCOS, I've rad that people have gained up to 70 lbs for no reason bc of it. I got lucky and didnt gain nearly that much. I gained about 40. Between the two issues its been really hard to keep it off. I eat really healthy with the occasional "treat" and work out everyday wether it be at the gym or zumba and was still gaining. Its incredibly frustrating.

stephensmommy --- 13 years ago -

also did tricare pay for you to go to the Reproductive Endocrinologist?

well...the ultrasound showed the cysts...not sure on the testosterone...it was never tested (if there is a way) and thats a BIG negative with the body hair....im not any hairer then the norm like I've always had.

Metformin is a drug used to treat diabetes and insulin resistance. its not a fertility drug and wont necessarily help someone get pregnant. it is prescribed to people with PCOS because almost all the women who suffer from PCOS are insulin resistant to some degree. Insulin resistance and hormone imbalances are the main causes of PCOS. Diet and exercise will go a long way in correcting both.

Megz (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

Stephens mommy yes trice pays for infertility doctors, they won't pay for iui or in vitro but the meds and drs they will

stephensmommy --- 13 years ago -

awesome, i need to make another apt for a refill so i will ask more about it. Thank you for the info ladies!
