We are heading to ft hood from Ft. lewis in a few days, anyone make this drive recently? which route did you take? how many days did it take you?

Megz (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

LOL Kasey my husband and I just did that trip but from Fort Bragg, NC to lewis.

it took us 10 days and we took the northern route and got stuck in a snowstorm. that was mid april.

Are you planning on living on or off post? if you are planning on living on post make sure your husbands unit signs block 14 on his PCS leave form or the housing office WILL NOT back date his eligibility date to the day he left fort hood. They will use the day he signs in. They also will not let you move in until he is signed into the post and inprocessing. Trust me we just went through all of this with then it was a pain in the butt. My friends are taking the southern route thru texas to see family then up thru nevada when they leave bragg tomorrow. Good luck on your trip and i hope you have fun. I love it here so far although it does rain a lot and people here drive worse than in Killeen believe it or not. the first three days we were in Tacoma, we saw at least an accident a day that had a minimum of 3 cars per accident. its pretty bad.

hahahah it rainned for 42 days when I first got to ft lewis five years ago, it never freakin stops, the 2 weeks of summer you get will be great though, we are ready to go texas is home, my husband is from greensboro orginally. I did enjoy my time in washington I have to say I just couldnt have lived here forever, We are planning to live on post I submitted all our paperwork via fax, they say they have a home waiting for us well see, I will believe it when I see it! yes they do drive bad here, no courtesy at all and the speed limit on most freeways here is 55.

ahh lol i read ur post wrong. your going from lewis to hood not the other way around. Your topic makes it sound like ur heading to lewis :D

hood is definitely interesting. did they say which housing your getting?

kasey --- 14 years ago -

oops the topic does sound that way ,my mistake we are suppose to be in commanche2, a 4 bedroom. I have seen a few pics but have heard each unit varies alot. Do you know anything about this housing area? dont be shy give it to me straight hahahah. We really only want to stay on post for a year tops, and buy near georgetown, maybe saledo or, even belton area.

Are ya'll living on post at lewis? We lived on post a few years back some areas were very nice others not so much..

Megz (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

we are on McChord

Mellie --- 14 years ago -

We made that drive back in Nov. We left on the afternoon of the 5th and got here the night of the 9th. We went through Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorodo, and New Mexico. Don't remember what highways, but we took it pretty slow cuz of the uhaul, and stopped every night cuz of the little one. Hope this helps. Good luck!

LOL you will find that hood's housing is pretty skankilishous however i live off post so maybe I shouldn't talk like I know? hahaha...but some of the bigger houses in comanche are newer I think?

We just made that trip this past Oct. took us 3 days to get here. We took the scenic route going thru CA (had friends there)then cutting over (on 84) going thru AZ,NM...eventually making it here. Drive safe and you'll get a nice dose of sun and dry weather here. I've been really loving it!Nice change from WA.

zs_wifey --- 14 years ago -

Did they tell you if you have a regular four bedroom or the four bedroom with a "bonus room" ? The newer houses are 4 bedroom and look nice on the outside but they are SMALL!! The older houses that are regular 4 bedrooms I have heard are pretty cramped too. Com 2 is ok it definitely depends on which side you live on! What rank is your hubby? Because as far as I know that determines which house you are getting.

we are also taking the cali route, we want to stop in tuson, did yall cut over to 10? and did you cut over near LA?

kasey --- 14 years ago -

they didnt tell us if we had a bonus room or not in fact they didnt tell us much, I looked up the pics myself online, apparently someone else is moving out the 26th and our move in is contigent on that, housing said it would be ready on the 1 of june, seems pretty quick to me to get it move in ready.... well see. it says that neighborhood is for e4 thru e6 are they seperated though?

zs_wifey --- 14 years ago -

The neighborhood is all ranks actually, but they do try and keep E6 promotable through E8 on the same streets from what I've seen. My street has mostly E7 and up (My neighbor that I "share" a wall with is a CSM just to give you an example) there is at least one E5 though but they generally try and keep it seperated. I live on a fairly quiet street. My best suggestion to you is REALLY look over the house when you sign on. We were in such a rush and after we accepted the house and did our walk through, honey I had over 20 pages of discrepencies and I had them re send a cleaning and carpet cleaning crew out here before we moved our stuff in.
The good side is the schools. The elementary school is Clarke Elem its in the neighborhood and goes up to grade 3.Then 4-5 goes to an intermediate school and then the middles school is Smith MS. I have a son in Kinder and a son in 7th at Smith and they love it. Don't however get me started on the high school situation lol,I'm just thankful my daughters were grandfathered into their HS and not sent to Killeen HS like all new HS students here are. Killeen HS is the WORST HS around! Any other questions feel free to ask!
You will love the location of the neighborhood, the PX and Commissary are literally across the street up a block from the neighborhood and right off Clear Creek gate.
