Can someone explain Dity move? I am thinking of doing this because you can make money on it right? Also, I prefer to have my stuff with me and not worry about waiting for a while to receive items from the military movers.

I know it would probably be a lot easier to do military move considering my current situation: husband gone and I have a 7 month old daughter. However, I really like the money making end of DITY. lol. We are a young couple so we don't have tons of stuff, but we do have alot of junk too..LMAO. I am hiring a personal organizer to help me declutter a bit, so hopefully I can reduce the amount of items significantly!

So basically they pay you per mile and for weight? Do they pay (reimburse) for the truck rental?

We are moving from Fort Hood to Fort Bliss so it's about 500 miles.

This website is really informative...

You can make some money on a DITY move but since your only moving 500 miles, i dont know that you would really make very much...you also have the option of doing a partial dity..where you get a truck and take things that you know you will need right away or certain valuables and let the govt move the big stuff for you...you do get travel pay which is seperate and you can also request an advance on it, that pays for hotel, gas etc plus with travel pay you get DLA which varies by your husbands rank..

Megz (Mod) --- 7 years ago -

On a dity you get .19 cents per mile. Dla is based on location and rank. The money maker is weight. You get paid 95% of what the moving company would make. You have to weight empty then full. You request an advance and that pays for the moving truck. You then turn in all reciepts, including truck rental, food, gas and hotel and it gets put on ur travel w2 for tax time. They will only pay to move u if its a pcs tho.

mrsgoose --- 7 years ago -

Yeah it's brigade PCS move. all of 4th ID CAB is moving from Hood to Bliss. So basically you don't get the money until tax time besides the advance to pay for the truck?

FreeLittleFootFanClub (Mod) --- 7 years ago -

No you will get money after you move ( besides the advance) Once all the paperwork is in. You just will have to pay taxes on it. So when you get your W2 at tax time you will get a second one for the travel pay.

mrsgoose --- 7 years ago -

Oh so is it a lot of money you pay taxes on? All the people I talked to say you can make money on Dity moves even when they moved from Fort Sill to Hood and San Antonio here. Although it might be more work than it's worth...since it's just me and I have a very active baby.

SheShe --- 7 years ago -

We just did a partial dity move. It's basically $1 per pound. If you don't have heavy furniture, then I would recommend a full dity move. That's where you make the money.

mrsgoose --- 7 years ago -

Basically we have a couch, loveseat, kitchen table, crib, queen pillowtop bed, about 6 book shelves, 2 dressers, a cheap walmart entertainment center, I have TONS of books (like 500), washer and dryer, clothes, thats basically all our heavy items.

melandj --- 7 years ago -

how do you get an advance on travel pay ?

SheShe --- 7 years ago -

Go to finance and ask for a TLA

SheShe --- 7 years ago -

If you can move it yourself, then that's what I would do

mrsgoose --- 7 years ago -

Yeah if I could have the money upfront for a truck that would be very very helpful. Also we were told at the meeting that you get 2 months of BAH for a PCS move like this one and I was wondering if anyone knows if that is after you sign a lease or if you have to pay it then get reimbursed later??? I will have to find out from Housing probably....uggg I hate moving! Especially by myself!

sscott87 --- 7 years ago -

The 2 months BAH you're talking about is DLA (Dislocation Allowance) and it's roughly 2 months worth, it's actually a number based on rank and with or without dependents. You can indeed take an advance on it, along with an 80% advance on travel pay, by simply going through finance. It's "free" money, it's not an advance on your pay that will be taken back over the next 12 months (which you can also ask for, if need be).

After just doing my first 2 PCS moves in the first 8 months of my time in the army, I've done a full DITY and a partial DITY. The full, I did simply because I was able to have my family load everything in a uhaul trailer and bring it to me at Ft Leonard Wood from Alabama. Roughly 2500 pounds, 500 miles, made about $1500 just on the DITY side of it, with probably $500-750 in rental/gas/etc expenses. Pretty decent money, I bought a new TV with it.

Just did a partial this time down to Ft Hood. Basically, it's a regular military move, plus you get paid a small amount for what little stuff you take in your own POV. It's the way to go if you're doing a military move, because you're likely to keep a few boxes with you anyway so might as well get paid for it, even if only 100 pounds. You're authorized up to 500 pounds (that's for a single soldier, may be more with dependents) and I was told I could make nearly $300 from it. I had 400 pounds after being weighed, figure I'll get about $200, in addition to my $1500 for DLA, and $300ish for travel.

So not a bad deal either way you go. It's really just something for you to personally figure out what is best for your situation, but I'd say let the military do it, since it's just you and a young one.

Thank you clearing this up. I have heard yes and no about getting advanced DLA so this is good to know.

mrsgoose --- 7 years ago -

Jamie I called finance and you can now get 100% DLA in advance.

So the question I have is the only thing you "make" the mileage and per pound?? Or do they reimburse you for truck rental, etc??? That's the thing I can't understand. We probably have an identical move to your first move going 500 miles to Bliss and I think we have a bit more weight since I have a lot of books and we are married with a baby. The extra money would com in handy to pay for the excess in rent that it will cost at Bliss since Cost of living is about 30% over what BAH covers. You cannot find a 3 bedroom house there for less than 750 and most are 800-900 and BAH for E-4 is 930. So in order to afford the space we need we will have to use savings. So I'm still interested in finding out if it's worth it.

There's a place on the paper work for the breakdown of expenses, and keeping your receipts for rentals and what not is a smart idea. Gas receipts they don't really care about, I've been told that at 2 different posts now, that it's not going to do anything for you. Tolls, do keep your toll receipts as those can be claimed. In any case, things like gas come in on the travel part of it. For each person, you'll get a set amount per day of travel. It's a higher rate for the soldier, a little lower for grown dependents (wife), and less for children under 12, 14, or something around that.

They explained it well here at Hood, that basically most everyone is going to claim the max on expenses like fuel and food, so you're just automatically given the max per diem for each person, each day.

Any lodging expenses, keep a receipt with a zero balance (from when you checked out, shows the room price, taxes, break down by day, and a zero balance because you've paid). You'll be reimbursed up to 10 days for TLE (temporary lodging expenses) between your travel and your arrival and getting into a place.

I honestly don't really know about the truck rental. I know that's something to keep the receipts for, which I did and turned in for my first move (full DITY)but I can't recall looking at a breakdown of how I was paid and whether I was specifically given said amount.

Hope this clears up a little bit for you though, and gives you a better idea of what you can get. Really, you can't keep too many receipts, because worst they'll do is tell you and your husband that you can't claim it or that they don't reimburse but so much.

i am at bliss... finally. its yucky here. just my opinion. las cruces is beautiful though and i have a great house! its about 40min from bliss! its sooo much nicer here. not a military town. dont have my stuff though, they will deliver monday. sleeping on air mattress. yuck

mrsgoose --- 7 years ago -

Well I wasn't all too impressed with Killeen when I moved here either! I have to hope for the best since I am going to be stuck there! Don't really think a commute is in the cards for us. I don't want to have to drive that far to get to post.

Megz (Mod) --- 7 years ago -

Sscot, the gas, food, tolls and all that are not reimbursed by the military (well food is bc of the perdiem) but it is put on your dity w2 and can be claimed on your taxes at the end of the year. Ive done 2 full dity's and one partial so far. So if you do a dity keep ALL of your reciepts. if you get an oil change on your vehicle, thats a tax deduction, tune up is same thing. anything that is in preparation for hte trip, the cost of the uhaul, the gas, tolls, hotel, food. all of it gets reported on the w2 for tax deduction.
